Malawi: Foreign trips for civil servants reduced


  1. President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi Wednesday banned public officers from foreign trips that goes beyond six times. Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Bright Msaka added the president also directed that each foreign trip should not exceed 14 days - aspiring to advance sensible utilisation of the government pulse, a statement said.

    "His Excellency the President, therefore, calls upon all ministers, deputy ministers, principal secretaries, controlling officers, chief executives, heads of institutions and organisations listed above to strictly adhere, and ensure strict adherence, to this directive," reads part of the directive.

    The organisations listed include statutory corporations and government agencies and employees of institutions that earn their salaries from the consolidated fund.

    Malawian ministers and top officials are known to travel abroad often, on missions they can easily delegate to their subordinates. The president himself has been accused before of too many external travels.
