Malawi: DStv cut decoder prices ahead of WC

  1. As the world looks ahead to the World Cup in South Africa next month DStv provider MultiChoice Malawi has reduced the prices of decoders to give a chance to more Malawians to watch all the 64 games.

South Africa will become the first country in Africa to hold the World Cup which kicks off on June 11 to July 11 and will bring together the best players among them Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi.

Multichoice's Sales and Marketing Manager said Sunday that a complete DStv set would now be selling at 19,999 Malawi Kwacha whereas the 1131 decoder is selling at 9,999 Malawi Kwacha.

The HD-PVR decoder which produces quality pictures will be selling at 66,999 Malawi Kwacha.

Many Malawians especially those in rural areas have failed to acquire decoders and watch DStv because of its exorbitant prices.

However, Nyirenda said the move was aimed at giving a chance to people from both urban and rural areas to watch all the 64 games.

Despite Malawi national football team popularly known as Flames failing to make it to the World Cup, Malawians are a soccer loving nation and the Barclays Premiership has been dominating proceedings in many households.

“We have introduced this promotion to appreciate the significance of the World Cup to African audiences especially Malawians. With the new prices which are available while stocks last, those that have been wondering on how they can watch the World Cup in their home, this is an opportunity,” said Nyirenda.

DStv through SuperSport said it will have four dedicated channels for the 2010 World Cup which will give an opportunity to Africans who will not make it to South Africa to watch all the games live.

Five countries including the hosts South Africa will represent the continent at the event. The other African countries participating at the World Cup are Cameroon, Algeria, Ghana and Nigeria.

South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma said recently that the event will expose the other side of the continent as well as generate income for the country.
