Malawi: Activists fight misuse of donor funds

    An NGO, Gender Coordination Network has warned its members against the misuse of donor funds to fulfill their personal ambitions. It further distanced itself from members who have received funding from the Norwegian government for women empowerment, but have ventured into politics in their areas.

    This follows the resignation, from the network, of chairperson for the Permanent Committee on Women and Politics, Reen Kachere, and fellow board member Faustace Chirwa- both of whom have indicated that they will contest as members of parliament during the May 19 parliamentary and presidential elections.

    GCN deputy chairperson, Maxwell Matewere, said the organisation was asking the two individuals to make a public declaration of their positions so that people could know their views did not reflect the stand of GCN.

    "These things have a bearing on transparency and accountability, and we would want to clear our name in this," said Matewere.

    Both Kachere and Chirwa confirmed in separate interviews that they wanted to contest. They also said they have resigned from their positions in GCN.
