Malawi:VIPs warned not to evade tax

  1. By Frazer Potani, Lilongwe, Malawi

Malawi’s revenue collection agency [Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA)] has warned Malawi Government Officials, Members of Parliament not to abuse their Very Important Person (VIP) privileges to evade taxes or risk facing the law.

The agency has since reminded the VIPs to honorably declare the goods they import into Malawi as required by law.

MRA Commissioner General Llyod Muhara in a statement said would wish to remind all VIPs that mere use of the VIP facilities does not entitle one to be exempted from payment of appropriate duties.

“The authority would like to advise that in order to ensure that the law is complied with, that Customs officers are authorized to physically examine any goods or luggage to ensure that correct amount of tax is assessed,” said Muhara.

Human Rights Consultative Committee National Committee National Coordinator Mabvuto Bamusi warned the VIPs that if they would abscond declaration of goods they import into Malawi it could affect development as less revenue collected would mean few resources for government to develop the country.

Malawi according to Finance Minister Ken Kandodo’s 2009/2010 Mid Year Budget review delivered in Parliament in Lilongwe on February 2, this year MRA collected K66.8 billion revenue from July to December and even its own target.

Malawi Government relies on over half on revenue and the remainder from donors to run its operations including purchase of drugs for the sick in public hospitals.
