Malawi:Judicially strike worries police

    The on going strike by staff at Malawian courts which went national on its third day on monday,has worried the country's police service.
    Davie Chingwalu Police Public Relations Officer for southern Malawi said in an interview the service is worried that with the regal systeam out of opperation,police cells will over croud.
    Chingwaru said since when the strike stated on thursday police opperations have been crippled as the police depends on the courts to determine on cases.
    "We make arrests on daily basis and we are now worried that even some suspects that maybe innocent are being denied justice in the present situation as normally courts are supposed to bail susspected criminals and not the police,"He said.
    Chingaru was however quick to point out that in minor cases the police were giving suspects bail.
    Chingwalu said under the present circumstances,the Malawi police service was sending all suspected criminals to remand which he said also violeted the Malawian constitutional requirement that suspects have to be charged within 48 hours.
    An Africa news visit at the high court and magistrates' court in Blantre,found that staff at the courts were idly walking in the corridors of the courts while others were bussy playing soccer and netball.
    Judicially Public relations Officer,a Mr Chigona could not be found for comment,but some striking staff that talked to africanews said the strike is to continue until the government revises their pay.
