MALAWI. United against Malaria campaign launched.

    Malawi has launched the campaign to fight against Malaria “United Against Malaria “. The campaign which is the global campaign aims at raising awareness of Malaria together with many partners and international football stars.

    Globally the campaign features players such as Manchester city and Ivory coast player Koro Toure in Malawi featured some of the flames stars including Orlando Pirates Midfilder Josephy Kamwendo and Allan Kamanga.

    Secretary for health Chris Kang’ombe said there need for more hands in the fight against Malaria since is the world’s second largest killer.

    He said six million malaria cases a year are atask enough to call for a wider effort .

    In Malawi the programme is being spearheaded by Population services international [PSI ] .

    PSI acting director of child health Charles Yuma said soon the target would soon go to rural areas where malaria is more serious due to lack of access to free mosquito nets.

    He said the disease is responsible for 4o percent of all under five hospitalization and 30 percent of all hospital deaths in under five children.

    “We hope for total cooperation to get the message across “ he said.

    The campaign goal is to catalyze football fans across the world to build support for the 2010 target of universal access to mosquito nets and Malaria medicine in Africa a crucial step to reducing deaths to near zero by 2015.
