Lothar Matthaeus tipped as Lions` trainer

    Germany football legend and former FIFA Player of the Year, Lothar Matthaeus is to succeed Frenchman, Paul Marie Le Guen as Cameroon national team coach, according to German sports magazine Kicker. The report said the German had reached agreement in principle with Cameroon Football Federation.

    However, Kicker said Matthaeus did not want to comment on the matter.

    Matthaeus, 49, is Germany’s record-capped player with 150 matches and captained them to the 1990 World Cup title in Italy. He has coached the Hungarian national team in the past and his last appointment, at Israel club Maccabi Netanja, ended a year ago.

    Le Guen did not renew his contract after Cameroon crashed out of the ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, finishing last in Group E with no point recorded and conceding defeats from the Netherlands, Denmark and Japan.

    Cameroon’s next task is qualifying for the 2013 African Cup of Nations, which takes place in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The Indomitable Lions are in group E along with the Teranga Lions of Senegal, the Simbas of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritius in the campaign due to start in September 2010.
