Libya expels US diplomat

    Libyan authorities ordered a diplomat at the United States embassy in Tripoli to leave the country within 24 hours for breaching diplomatic rules. The Libyan government gave no details of the expulsion and that a spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Tripoli said it had no comment.

    Also, the State Department in Washington said it had no immediate comment.

    “The Libyan authorities asked the Political Affairs Secretary at the U.S. embassy in Tripoli to leave Libya within 24 hours,” Reuters quoted the Internet edition of the Libyan Oea newspaper as saying.

    “The expulsion followed the diplomat's visit to the city of Ifrane, 130 km (80 miles) south-west of the Tripoli. A visit considered by the Libyan authorities to be contrary to the rules and norms of diplomacy,” Oea and a second Libyan paper Quryna said.

    After decades of animosity, the United States and Libya renewed diplomatic ties in 2004 following the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s renouncement of weapons of mass destruction.

    Relations between the two countries hit snag earlier this year after a U.S. State Department official denigrated Gaddafi in a speech. But the official later apologized to Libyan authorities and the matter was laid to rest.
