The government of Liberia has conferred its highest honor on the president of Namibia, Hifikepunye Pohamba. The distinction, the Grand Cordon in the Most Venerable Order of Knighthood of the Pioneers of Liberia, was conferred on the Namibian leader by President Ellen Sirleaf last Wednesday in Monrovia.

The Liberian leader recounted the outstanding and sacrificial services of president Pohamba in the liberation struggle for independence of his country. In her citation conferring the distinction, the Liberian leader further recalled, among others, the Namibian leader’s role dating back to 1974 and 1978 when he travelled to Tanzania and Zambia for military training and his leadership role in the liberation movement, under the reign of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), as a political mobilizer in 1960.
The Namibian leader, 73, arrived in Monrovia July 28, a day following the celebration of Liberia’s 162nd independence in central Liberia. He met with the National Legislature and other important groups.
Namibia was among countries contributing troops to the United Nations peace keeping mission in Liberia during its heydays of civil crises.
Making remarks after receiving the honor, the Namibian president reassured his country’s commitment consolidating peace in Liberia. President Pohamba who recounted Liberia’s role in the liberation of his country, expressed delight over the honor, saying it was not for him alone but the people of Namibia. He was also honored by Liberia’s traditional council.
Meanwhile, Namibia and Liberia have signed a communiqué aimed at strengthening ties between the two African nations in the areas of fisheries and tourism. The signing ceremony which took place at the Roberts International Airport Thursday July 30, minutes to president Pohamba’s departure, marked the end of a three-day official visit to Liberia by aged Namibian leader.
