Liberia: UN troop on high alert

The United Nations Peace Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has vowed to quell any attempts to hinder the existing peace in the country. The robust military mission said it is keen and alerted on growing developments in and out of the country, informing would-be trouble makers to retreat.

UNMIL’s caveat comes pointing at two unfolding issues - the allegations that the Junta government in neighboring Guinea is alleging military operations on its borders and the threats of violence by former warlords following the release of the country’s Truth Commission final report, recommending prosecution, among others.

Speaking at the UNMIL regular press briefing in Monrovia on Thursday, UNMIL force commander Lt. Gen. Zahirul Alam said UNMIL, after a joint operation with Liberian securities, sees the Guinea Junta claim of military operation in Liberia to evade Guinea as false.

The Junta of Musa Dauda Camara on July 11 reportedly alarmed of ongoing military movement on the borders of Liberia, Senegal and Guinea Bissau aimed at destabilizing the regime, something the Liberian government has since refuted.

UNMIL said it is propelled to dispel any act of unrest in the wake of threats by warmongers, some of whom were recently recommended by the TRC for prosecution for allegedly committing heinous crimes against the people of Liberia.

Following the release of the report, the warlords-mostly heads of defunct warring groups and their associates assembled at a horridly arranged meeting at the Monrovia City Hall and, among other anti-peace utterances, challenged the report and vowed to resist arrest.
