Liberia: Armed robbers seized 7-month old baby

  1. Acts of isolated violence and sadism continue unabated in Monrovia and its environs, with armed and cutlass brandishing gangs ransacking homes of peaceful residents.
The latest of such banditry was to come over the weekend in two separate communities in Monrovia beginning with Chicken Soup Factory, Garnersville where, asual, several valuables and thousands of Liberian dollars were snatched away.
During the raid, a local daily quotes one of the afflicted as saying a seven- month-old baby was briefly seized for a ransom-a mobile phone-by one of the bandits.
The robber is said to have demanded the mobile phone from the mother of the child or he would take away the baby. The aggrieved said when his demand was met the mugger threw the innocent child in a nearby bed and left the scene with his colleagues who had already succeeded in their fetch for cash and valuables.
Strangely, the second badge of robbers, who headed for another community-Soul Clinic in Paynesville-were shameful losers, at least for that night. According to the daily, a 52 year old man, Bernard Boye, made the bandits to swiftly abandon their mission and fled for their dear lives following 25 minutes of fierce dual. The hefty Bernard, though overpowered them, but came out with bruises.
Meanwhile, Bernard has lamented the refusal of his neighbors to come to his aid despite alarms for help. He is recommending drastic action from government against neighbors refusing to aid others when attack by armed robbers.
Of late, armed robbers will have to calculate thrice their moves before launching an onslaught as midnight callers on a radio show-crime watch- are constantly embarrassing them. A newly hatched troop of the national police-Emergency Response Unit (ERU)-is also aiding the process. However, the muggers are still a step ahead.
