[MOBILE VIDEO] In a move seen as a step in stemming the political turmoil in the country, opposition leader Raila Odinga and Mwai Kibaki met face to face Thursday for the first time since the December 27 election.
They emerged from the president's Harambee house office where they were flanked by mediators who included former UN Secretary-general Koffi Annan, Graca Machel and former Tanzanian president, Benjamin Mkapa. This is seen as a first step towards reconciliation after a bitter standoff triggered by the disputed December 27 elections.
But hopes off getting the reconciliation talks underway were dimmed when the ODM team was angered by remarks made by President Mwai Kibaki during their media briefing when he said that the current crisis can be solved internally. Kibaki further said in his speech that he was ``the duly elected president of Kenya, `` which made an uncomfortable-looking Raila give a shocked look as the president went on with his speech.
According to a source, Annan had insisted on both men exchange copies of their remarks as a sign of good faith only for Kibaki to read a different version during his speech. Koffi Annan is to stay on till an agreement is reached
