Kenya suspends six police officers

Kenyan authority had suspended six police officers over allegations of being involved in smuggling of foreigners into the country. The officers including the North Eastern deputy PPO Philip Ndolo were interdicted following investigations that had been made by the country's police headquarters.

Others included a former deputy Provincial Criminal Investigations Officer (PCIO) in the province who had been transferred to Nairobi, a former OCPD in Garissa, his DCIO and two other senior commanders.

The officials who were handed their letters last week were asked to hand over government equipment until they are cleared.

The police headquarters had carried out secretly investigations following several complaints that authorities in Garissa were involved in the smuggling of Somalis to Nairobi.

The move comes after four immigration officials including a deputy director were interdicted over illegal migrants.

The investigations are also launched to understand how several foreigners travel to their way to Nairobi after passing through Garissa, where various agencies charged with fighting the problem are based.

It also is following the July arrest of an assistant commissioner of police who was found attempting to smuggle three Somalis at the Garissa Bridge.

At least 17,000 illegal migrants from the Horn of Africa flee to South Africa annually. Most of them transit through Kenya, according to the International Organization for Migration’s report in February.

The organization said crisis and poverty were forcing Somalis and Ethiopians to carry out dangerous journeys to better places.
