Kenya: speaker hits out at Treasury over MPs perks.

  1. A storm is brewing in Kenya after the Speaker of the parliament, Kenneth Marende instructed Finance Minister, Uhuru Kenyatta to table two bills that will legalize the increment of MPs perks or face the house to explain why he should not do so.

The show down is between parliament and the executive after MPs adopted a proposal to increase their perks earlier this month making some of the world best paid politicians.

MPs have accused Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta pf using the issue to kick start his campaign for the presidency in 2010 saying the minister has been making statement to draw public support for his bid.

The move by the MPs to have their salaries increased has drawn public anger and criticism by Civil Society Organizations which have termed as massive attempt by the MPs to loot public cash.

Legislators are seeking an increase of their monthly salaries and allowance which is currently at sh851, 000 to shs1.1 million.

In a bid to have their wishes granted, MPs have threatened to jeopardize government business by shooting two critical bills, the Appropriation Bill which is to be approved next month.

President Kibaki who has called off a crucial cabinet to discuss the issue this month is said to have attended an informal MPs meeting to resolve the conflict that is likely to get jeopardize government business.

Finance Minister, Uhuru Kenyatta has time and again told MPs that the government doesn’t have funds to effect the pay increment even if it’s passed in parliaments.
