[MOBILE VIDEO] If talks to end the current political impasse in Kenya fail to yield results, the country risks sliding back to turmoil as the threat of a full scale inter-ethnic war remains eminent.

The majority of Kenyans have vested hope in the meditation team led by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. A break through in the talks appeared elusive as the team returned to the capital after two-days of deliberation which failed to resolve the crisis.

The talks will resume again next Tuesday as international pressure mounts on Kenyan leaders to end the impasse. In the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, residents have expressed fear that the failure of the talks would amount to a declaration of a 'state of war' and have started preparing for a full-scaled war.

The situation is the same in Nairobi where tension and fear returned as residents expressed anger with the Government side led by Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Martha Karua who has accused foreign diplomats for meddling in Kenya's internal affairs.

Young traditional fighters have been recruited in various parts of the country and the strengthening of militias in parts of the North Rift and in Nairobi is indicative of the possibilities for a confrontation. Alex Kayere, a staff at the Nairobi City Council, fears that if the talks fail, Kenya will be doomed.
