The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) service has been re-introduced in Kenya by Kenya's Orange (formerly Telkom Wireless). Telkom Kenya's Head of Corporate Communications Angela Ng'ang'a-Mumo confirmed that CDMA services reputed to be relatively stronger than GSM, will now be available countrywide.
[htmlThe company was compelled to discontinue running Telkom Wireless at the national level by the telecoms regulator last year, after it launched its Orange mobile on a global satellite for mobile communications (GSM) network, Itnewsafrica.com reported.
CDMA is a technology for digital transmission of mobile telephone.
Telkom hailed the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) for allowing the firm to reintroduce the service on a national scale, Mumo stressed that Orange Fixed Plus subscribers will continue to enjoy superior services on the firms CDMA platform.
“Technically, CCK requires telecommunication service providers operating CDMA platforms to operate within regional zones thus the need to introduce a national roaming service,” she explained.
“Over the past one year, Telkom Kenya has been continuously expanding and improving our suite of voice and data services for both corporate and individual customers and we continue to revise our product offering to ensure value for money to the consumer.” The reintroduction of a national CDMA service solution on Telkom Kenya’s platform will further spur the firm’s positioning as an integrated telecommunications service provider.
