Nyayo national stadium in Kenya has been changed to Coca Cola national stadium after the multi-national company won the naming rights to the stadium. The deal worth USD 1.5 million will see the beverage company do branding, marketing and naming rights to the whole stadium for the next three years.

The deal was signed between Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) and the Coca Cola Company. SSMB is the government agency in charge of all sporting facilities in the country. Coca Cola money will be used in refurbishing the stadium and the rest will go to the kitty of SSMB.

“It is a good way of raising revenue and also raising the profile of the facility,” said the Assistant Director of SSMB, Julias Ndii.

This is the first ever deal to be signed in Kenya and people are curious to see how it plays out in the future. In addition to the naming rights, the beverage company will also enjoy beverage supply and exclusive advertising in the stadium.

Coca Cola national stadium (formerly Nyayo Stadium) has a 30,000 sitting capacity and has been in existence for the past 24 years. It is in this stadium that rallies were held in the past that ushered in new dawns. Huge matches have also been played in the same facility.

It is the only facility next to the city centre and during events attracts huge numbers of people due to its strategic position. For the people of Kibera-its ideal-since most of them can just walk from Kibera to the stadium.

“Our sponsorship of the Coca Cola national stadium is a demonstration of the company's commitment to investing in Kenyan Sports and to creating enduring connections with our consumer,” said Alex Maditsi, Coca Cola Country Manager.
