David Kimutai Too, a second opposition legislator killed in one week, was shot in a hotel in Eldoret, an area where some of the worst atrocities have been perpetrated in the ethnic skirmishes that have engulfed the country.

Hussein Ali told journalists in Nairobi that he was said to be having an affair with Eunice Chepkwony, a traffic officer who was the girlfriend of a police constable who shot both of them. The constable was later arrested as he tried to flee. Ms Chepkwony is seriously wounded and is currently in the intensive care unit. Rumours are rife that a Kikuyu hit squad made up of the dreaded Mungiki militia has been sent to Rift Valley to assassinate top politicians from that region.

The government has come out strongly against this rumours which are being spread by SMS and anyone caught sending out such messages has been warned they will be arrested.

Mr Too was a staunch advocate for peace in the volatile Rift Valley region and is one of the MPs who have been trying to bring peace in the area. The ODM party has come out strongly saying it is a wider scheme to assassinate their members. On receiving news of his death, residents burnt a bus and the situation is tense at the moment.

In Kisumu youths have blockaded roads and the situation has become tense. There has been a lull in the ethnic confrontations as teams from both the government and the ODM party negotiate to try and find a solution for the political impasse.
