Kenya: Gov’t feels new constitution wave

    After the adaption of the long awaited new constitution in Kenya, which formed part of the agenda four in the formation of a coalition government brokered by former UN chief Kofi Annan, the heat of the new constitution is much felt within the corridors of high government offices.

    In less than one month, in what is cited as provision by the newly adapted constitution, four senior government officials have been forced out of their offices in corruption related cases. They include higher education minister Hon William Ruto, Foreign affairs minister Hon Moses Wetangula, his Permanent secretary Mr Thuita, and the latest casualty His Worship the mayor of Nairobi Mr Majiwa.
    Unlike hon Ruto who was suspended by the two principals, Hon Wetangula,Mr Thuita and Mr Majiwa were forced by circumstances to resign.

    According to former Minister for Justice and constitutional affairs Hon Martha Karua who is also the chairperson of Narc Kenya, this is just like "sweeping at the door while leaving the house dirty".This is an indicator that there is more to come in terms of resignation or suspension of senior government officials, in anti corruption war.

    Hon Ruto is implicated in fraudulent sell of forest land to a parastatal. Hon Wetangula and his Ps Mr Thuita are implicated in questionable acquisition of property by Kenyan foreign missions abroad, the major one being purchase of embassy house in Tokyo Japan. Mr Majiwa on his part is implicated in the fraudulent purchase of cemetery land in the outskirts of Nairobi.
