Kenya: Annan extends time for tribunal

  1. Jack Shaka, AfricaNews reporter in Nairobi, Kenya
The former UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan has given Kenya two months to set up a local tribunal to try the perpetrators of the post election violence in 2007/2008. Two attempts to set up a tribunal have been thwarted so far. The first time only 52 members of parliament were in the chamber-hence lack of quorum.

The second time the constitution amendment bill was defeated thus beckoning for The Hague.

In a press release on Tuesday the Prime Minister-Raila Odinga said Annan will hold on a bit longer with the names to give them time to work out the issues that led to the defeat.

“Prime Minister Raila Odinga told Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma that he had discussed with Annan the developments that led to the defeat of the tribunal Bill in Parliament last week,” the press statement went on.

If the tribunal will not be set up by the time the two months elapse, Annan will have no option but to hand over the envelope with the names to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Many Kenyans are not sure of the local tribunal especially with regard to its independence. Many fear that it will be easily manipulated by some people mentioned in the Waki report especially those in the envelope Annan holds.

With the extension in deadline, many believe that Big Fish have been named and only time will tell.
