The maiden Kenya Film and Television awards would be taking place early this year. Stakeholders in the film industry said they are bent on witnessing the event being organized by the Kenya Film Commission.

The annual event is to celebrate and recognize excellence in production of local Kenyan movies and stars. At the moment the Commission is receiving entries from prospective award winners.
The Commission said it hopes the competition would encourage professionalism and dynamism among actors and the key individuals involved in film and TV. Entries would be judged in three stages - There will be a Nomination Academy to receive and classify them and then nominate a number for each category. Then the nominated entries will be announced and passed to a Voting Academy to pick their preferences in each category. The structure of the voting is such that the public will be involved at some stages to contribute 40 per cent of the votes finally declaring the winning entries.
Winners would be welcomed to the venue on a red carpet as pertains at international awards’ ceremonies.
Gad Wesonga an independent film producer, who has produced two films, welcomed the idea, but had some reservations. “If it is meant to reward people who are presently active in film and TV, then I support it. But if we are going there to award film and people who last acted in early years, then I will have a problem.”
Kenya has produced over 125 professional films since independence. This year 13 people would be awarded in the film category, 14 Television awards and 6 special awards bringing the total to 33.
