Kenya:Surviving the Hard Times

    Families in the Kibera slum in Nairobi are getting by during this time of famine by planting their own vegetables in gunnysacks.

    The families realised that instead of buying the vegetables they can plant their own and save a lot of money.Three pieces of spinach or sukuma wiki(push the week) go for ksh 10 and if one has a huge family then it is almost impossible to feed them if one has no money.

    The families manage to harvest enough for themselves and sell the rest.

    ‘I have six of these bags-and they have helped me a lot since they don’t need space-that’s why they are behind here.’ Says Mary Anyango

    ‘Right now I can concentrate on buying flour for preparing Ugali to eat with the vegetables so that the children can survive. It’s all for the children.’ She says.

    Though it is a blessing, it is also a curse since at night or when they are not in, thieves drop by and harvest the vegetables. But despite that, the advantages according to Mary are enormous.
