KENYA PROTESTS TO ETHIOPIA OVER KILLINGS

  1. The Kenyan government has written a protest letter to the Ethiopia government over the killing of her people by raiders believed to be members of the Merille community from Ethiopia. On Monday, over 30 Kenyans from the Turkana community were massacred by the members of the Merille community, while 11others were killed on Tuesday evening. Over 52 others are yet to be found. The Turkanas were attacked on their way from the Ethiopian side where they had gone to buy food supplies.

The Kenyan Assistant Minister ofm Internal Security Orwa Ojode, told the press that the Kenya government has asked the Ethiopian administration to beef up security along its border with Kenya to stop the members of the Merille tribe from staging cross-boarder attacks against their Kenyan neighbours. Over ten members of the Merille raiders were killed in the fighting that lasted over ten hours. He also called on the Ethiopian administration to arrest those behind the attacks.

"We cannot allow lawlessness to be the norm of the day in lawful society and that is why we are investigating to take action on the Kenyans who participated in the incident. We want the Ethiopians who also took part in the killings prosecuted," said Ojode.

Hundreds of women, elderly men and women continue fleeing the Tondinyand and Kokuro areas, which have seen the worst cases of violence between the two communities.

It is bvelieved that the raids are being carried out by the Merille tribe as a ritual of passage into manhood. The circumcision period is nigh amongst the merille.

When AfricaNews visited the area, workers drawn from various humanitarian organisation were loading the victims' bodies on tractors for disposal. Children and women were fleeing the area, in fear of renewed attacks. The government through the Ministry of Special Programmes has dispatched food and cooking oil for the residents. The government spokesman said that this is just but a temporary measure to stop the Turkanas from crossing over to Ethiopia hence making them prone to attacks. The Kenyan government hasd meanwhile beefed up security along its boarder with Somalia, by moving the Kenyan Police camps closer to the boarder. The Ethiopian government is yet to reply.
