KENYA: ICC ISSUES SUMONSES AGAINST SIX

  1. The International Criminal Court on Tuesday issued summonses against six suspects said to bear the greatest responsibility for the 2007-2008 post election violence that hit Kenya after the disputed general election.

The six individuals are slated to appear before the ICC's Pre-Trial Chamber in person on April 7 , failure of which the Hague-based International Criminal Court will issue arrest warrants against them.

The summonses come at at time when the Kenyan vice president is spearheading a shuttle diplomacy to have the cases against the six individuals deferred for a year to enable the formation of a tribunal to try them locally. However, three of the five members of the UN security Council with veto powers have indicated that they will reject the request. They are the US, France and Britain. Hence, the issuance of summonses renders the VC's efforts futile.

The six individuals are the Deputy Prime-Ministerand Minister of Finace Uhuru Kenyatta, former cabinet Ministers William Ruto and Henry Kosgey, Former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali, Head of the Civil Service Francis Muthaura and Journalist Joshua Sang. They are to appear at the Hague as follows: Ruto, Kosgey, and Sang will appear at 09.30hrs while Uhuru, Muthaura and Ali will make their entrance at 14.30hrs.

Immediately the news of the issuance of the summonses was announced, civil society organisations called for the resignation of all senior government officials whose names appear on the ICC list. But speaking separately, former Police boss and the current post master general of Kenya Hussein Ali, sdaid that he is ready to appear before the International Criminal Court to argue his case.
