At least 173 lives have perished in the post-election violence in western Africa nation of Ivory Coast, according to the United Nations. Beleaguered incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo has locked horns with world acclaimed winner of the November 28 polls Alassane Quattara.
The situation is tensed in the former French colony and high scale violence is imminent. The United States, according to the BBC, said it is exploring ways to strengthen the UN presence in Ivory Coast.
Liberian mercenaries are helping Gbagbo's troops, the UN has confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Commission is meeting in Geneva to discuss the crisis. It says 173 people have been killed in the past week and nearly 500 arrested in Ivory Coast.
