IS IT NOT TIME FOR AFRICAN STATES TO ALLOW DUAL CITIZENSHIP?

  1. Dual citizenship is still a very hot issue to tackle in by the political leadership in Africa . A lot of African countries had initiated the talks just to drop them later. One would just wonder what is wrong with someone holding two passports.
African countries have sometimes found themselves in very difficult situation in when it comes to allow or not allow dual citizenship and even go to the extent of breaching their own laws. In some of the occasions, States are the one in need of individuals shared between two countries and in other occasions it individuals who are in great need of serving their motherland.
portsmen are most of the times the ones that states beg to come back after having prospered outside their countries. Like of Aziz Makukula(formely of the DR Congo now a Portuguese playing for Bolton ), Taiwo Otieno (English born Kenyan footballer) are some of the examples that have put their motherlands in a tight corner. Taiwo Otieno has been issued a Kenyan passport without renouncing his British citizenship therefore breaching the Kenyan immigration act that does not allow Kenyans to hold any other citizenship against their Kenyan one.

Outside the sport world, experts say that dual citizenship can be extremely useful to African young, weak and fragile economies. Because many African who have made it in the Diaspora found themselves in very hard situation to invest in their countries of birth since they are considered foreigners.

It's believed that majority of prominent African leaders are reluctant to allow dual citizenship because they fear somehow exiled challenger who are more likely to implement what they have seen in their second nations. Only Burkina Faso , Benin , Central Africa Republic , Côte d'Ivoire , Egypt , Mali , Mauritius and South Africa allow dual citizenship even though restrictions are many.

In Kenya , the prime minister Raila Odinga had promised to table the issue for discussion while campaining before the 2007 general elections but Kenyans are yet to see any action taken.

Will it not be wonderfull for African government stop the hypocrisy and contribute to the development of their countries and the wellbeing of their citizens? http://www.hapamedia.net/dualcitizen.php
