Healthcare tourism in Tunisia

  1. Healthcare tourism in Tunisia attracts medical patients from various abroad destinations, More and more people are travelling to the north African country to undergo treatment abroad.

The medical tourism sector has already become the country's second highest foreign currency earner and the second largest employer in Tunisia, Most foreign patients come to Tunisia to undertake specialized surgical operations in the fields of cardiology, gynaecology or urology. However, Europeans are particularly attracted by the good reputation of Tunisian doctors in the field of cosmetic surgery and ophthalmologic, orthopaedic and dental care, so the Cosmetic surgery is currently the country’s specialty. Dental treatment is also available while major medical procedures are yet to become a prevalent feature of the industry.

The number of foreign patients having been treated in private Tunisian clinics has grown rapidly in the last five years. Prices are considerably lower than those charged by private clinics in the UK, the US and a large number of EU countries, including some with their own medical tourism industries, The rates are 40% to 60% less expensive than rates paid in Western countries. Tunisia attracts more and more Brits, Germans, Italians, French, Belgians, Swiss and Portugues.

Apart from being renowned as a sun-and-sea holiday destination and With a solid tourist infrastructure behind it, the country is capable of offering a high quality medical tourism packages. Its one of the most developed of the African nations, with a good health infrastructure it has nearly 80 private clinics with an accommodation capacity of 2500 beds, and highly-skilled medical staff, With more than 8000 doctors, many of whom trained in Europe and the US, so they have qualifications that are recognized in Europe and clinics which are compliant with all European standards.

Tunisia is a relatively small medical tourist destination when compared with other countries likes India, Thailand and Singapore; however, its appeal is perhaps greater to those residing in Europe who are looking for the benefits of cheap medical treatment without long-haul travel, Tunisian surgeons will perform breast enlargement surgery at around half the price they would expect to pay in established medical tourism destinations such as France for exemple.
