Guinea names new Prime Minister

    Guinea's military leaders have officially named a civilian as prime minister following a new peace deal brokered in Burkina Faso last week.

    Jean-Marie Dore, 71, a veteran opposition politician and head of a party known as Union for the Progress of Guinea was pronounced the new prime minister on Thursday in a statement read on state radio by one of the junta’s spokespersons, Commandant Mandjou Dioubate.

    Dore takes up the task to run a transitional government, culminating in the restoration of a civilian rule via free and fair elections, , Reuters said.

    Dore’s choice is strategic because he hails from Guinea’s Forestière region like exiled junta leader Dadis Camara. It is hope this will appease still agitating Camara’s supporters and bring them to support the new peace process.

    Guinea, world's biggest bauxite exporter, is currently being governed by Defence Minister Sekouba Konate, while former leader Camara who is recovering from bullet wounds following an assassination attempt remains in Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou in temporary exile.

    The radio statement did not give any further details about the composition of the government.
