Guinea: hope and despair.

  1. Guineans welcomed the speech of the interim president with hope and enthusiasm but much prudence. General Sekouba konaté has promised to restore democracy in the country by organizing fair and credible election within a short transition. For some it is a new hope whereas many say caution is necessary for the time being because acts are better than words. People still remember the promises made by Dadis when he seized the power. Dadis promised to organize fair and credible elections and return the power to civilians but as time went on he showed his real face and expressed his wish to stand for the presidential elections.
According to analysts, Konaté is very different from Dadis. At the beginning they had opposite ideas because Dadis wanted a long transition while Sekouba was in favor of a short transition. One of the most positive acts achieved by Konaté the interim president is the campaign of sensitization made in the different camps. He told soldiers about the necessity of return to constitutional order. He also promised to appoint a prime minister from the opposition.
In a statement, the active forces demanded the confirmation of Konaté as president of Guinea because of his commitments.
Critics say that 3 major clans (Pivi clan, Toumba clan and Sekouba can) of the army might fight. If Dadis comes back Pivi supported by soldiers from forest guinea and militias may compel General Sekou to return the power to Dadis. Anyway General Sekouba who received recommendations from French and American delegations will not accept to give back the power to Dadis because he can no more rule the country. As for Toumba, he will get ready to fight against Dadis and Pivi. It may be the beginning of a civil war. This risk of civil war had previously been denounced by the French Minister of foreign affairs Bernard Koutchner.
"The return of Dadis in Guinea could provoke a civil war", said Bernard Koutchner.

"The return of Dadis Camara under current conditions may cause a civil war in Guinea. His supporters will try to take the country in hostage and do what the late President General Lansana Conté (1984-2008) did during the last years of his life", with an Almighty entourage taking advantage of his illness. We need the African and international communities to mobilize and take their responsibility to prevent Dadis to return to Guinea," said the head of the Guinean branch of the African Assembly for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO) Mamadi Kaba.

For the president of the Guinean Organization for the Defense of Human Rights (OGDH) Thierno Maadjou Sow, Dadis must "stay out" because he may one day be judged by the international court of justice for the crackdown on September 28th in the stadium where at least 156 people were killed, 1,000 wounded and 100 women raped by soldiers.
Surprisingly RFI and BBC talked about the arrival of Dadis in Burkina Faso last Tuesday evening. This bad news created a big panic and disappointment in Guinea because Guineans know the return of Dadis will negatively affect the present transition in progress. Guinea is plunged in the deepest perplexity, and political leaders in most puzzling conjectures. Even konaté who was not expecting Dadis at this time was shocked.
On Wednesday, The matter is so burning that Konaté went to Burkina Faso to have talks with Dadis and the President Blaise compare.
Wednesday evening, General Konate had long discussions with the Captain Dadis Camara, before meeting the mediator in Burkina Faso.
According diplomatic sources, France and the United States are strongly opposed to the return of Captain Dadis Guinea due to the risks of plunging the country into a civil war.
For the spokesman of the junta, Idrissa Sheriff, the return of Captain Dadis Guinea is a "sensitive issue" and need explanations to justify prolonging his stay in Burkina.
Furthermore, President Blaise Compaoré currently opposes the immediate return of Captain Dadis Moussa Camara in Conakry, while a new transition is undertaken with the opposition Guinean.
