Guinea: New president swears in today

    Guinea is to inaugurate its new president on Tuesday, as the West African country transits from military led administration to civilian rule.
    Guinea's presidential election campaigns resumes
    President-elect Alpha Conde would be sworn in the capital Conakry after sweeping 52 percent of the votes over former Prime Minister Cellou Diallo in the November runoff election.

    Conde is seen as the first democratically-elected leader since the West African country gained independence from France in 1958.

    Thierno Balde of Guinea’s Research Institute on Democracy and the Rule of Law told VOA that several African heads of state and government, including South Africa's Jacob Zuma would be participating in the swearing-in ceremony of the veteran opposition leader.

    “Traffic has paralyzed the city, (because) so many people are attending the ceremony. It’s a new beginning for Guinea and now we are going to have a new democratically-elected president,” Balde said.
