Green Light For The First Double Decker Highway

  1. The World Bank has signed a Ksh.25 billion to the Kenyan government to finance the country’s first double decker highway, a move lauded as a boost to the ongoing road rehabilitation projects in the country.

The loan has been awarded on concessional terms at an interest rate of 0.75 per cent and it is to be repaid within 30 years, plus a grace period of ten years. The Kenyan government will contribute Ksh.9.5billion as partner funds towards the numerous road projects in the country. The signing of the loan, which was approved in August, has now set in motion the tendering process for construction to begin.
“The project will lay foundation for the development of mass transit systems that will benefit the low income population in Nairobi and beyond,” said the Finance Minister, Njeru Githae.

The World Bank Country Director Johannes Zutt echoed this saying that by easing traffic congestion and operating a modern commuter system, the urban transport improvement projects is making Nairobi a great city to live and to do business. He gave examples of countries like Colombia, Mexico and Nigeria as those who have embraced this concept of mass public transit systems that is helping to push their respective economies forward.

The mega double decker highway will run from Nyayo Stadium on Mombasa Road, east of the Central Business District, to the Westlands area. This is expected to significantly reduce the notorious traffic jams usually associated with East Africa’s largest city.

City residents have been the first to enjoy benefits of improved road networks since the government embarked on road rehabilitations across the country. The 12 lane Nairobi-Thika Super Highway which is the first of its kind in the region is complete and already in use.
