Globetrotting Mutharika for Iran-Africa summit

    African Union chairperson and Malawi leader, Bingu wa Mutharika this Monday left for Tehran in Iran, to participate in the Iran-Africa Summit. African leaders will be discussing development partnership with the government from September 14-15.

    Ahead of his departure, Mutharika told the press Africa needs development.

    "The meeting will help us find new ways on how to partner towards developing our nations. The ties that will be strengthened will also help the two summit players to support each other in the promotion of security on the African continent," he asserted.

    The Malawi leader will then proceed to New York to attend the 60th United Nations (UN) General Assembly after flying to communist Cuba for a state visit soon after the Tehran summit.

    Meanwhile, civil society organizations have expressed concern over the president's multiple trips, saying these in part contribute to forex drainage.

    Mutharika has just been to Rwanda for Kagame's swearing in ceremony, Namibia for a Comesa summit, Germany for bilateral relations promotion, before other short-spaced regional and international trips.
