Girl (9) beaten while tied on car jumpers

A 29-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Pumula Suburb was last week on Tuesday fined $US60 after he was convicted of thoroughly assaulting her nine-year niece while tying her on car jump starters following an altercation over a remote control gadget.
Earlier on in the morning- when the incident took place- the man had also severely whipped the girl for waking up late for school.
The man was convicted on his plea of guilty for contravening Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification And Reform) Act Chapter 9:23, assault.
The Prosecutor, Mr Jabulani Sibanda, told the court that on 14 October last year at around 7 am, the girl woke up late for school and his uncle took a whip and assaulted her all over the body.
The court heard that on the same day, when the child returned from school she had another misunderstanding with him over a remote control that she had accidentally broke.
At around 9 pm the man, who is a motor mechanic, took her to the toilet where he locked her inside.
The court further heard that he took some car jump starters and tied them on the toilet’s air vanes and then tied them on the hapless girl.
He then began to beat her up using a hosepipe and she started screaming for help.
Disturbed by the noise of the screaming girl, neighbours rushed to the scene to investigate what was happening.
To their horror, they found the girl being thoroughly beaten by her uncle while being tied up.
The neighbours then intervened and saved the girl from further lashing and cut off the jump starters using a kitchen knife.
A report was made to Pumula Police Station leading to the man’s arrest.
In his defence, the man told the court that he did not mean to hurt the girl but wanted to discipline her.
