Ghanaian internet users were more interested in happenings taking place in north African countries of Egypt and Libya than 'valentine' that characterize the month of February. According to the internet search giant - Google - the most searched items last month were Libya and Egypt with 'valentine' taking the third spot.

“It is not surprising that Ghanaians are interested about the unrest in Libya and in Egypt. Historically Ghana has deep rooted relationships with both countries. Egypt was a significant ally in Ghana’s fight for independence from the British and Ghana’s very first First Lady was an Egyptian. Similarly, Ghana’s relationship with Libya goes back to Africa’s fight for independence from colonial powers when Ghana, Libya, Egypt and a few other countries established diplomatic relations to form the Casablanca Bloc - a group with the aim of pushing political unity within Africa,” a statement from Google said.
Commenting on this month findings, Estelle Akofio Sowah Google Ghana Country Lead said “Over the past month the world has been focused on the potential of citizens to bring about positive change in their lives when they act as a united force. It is not surprising that Ghanaians, like people across the world, closely monitored the developments in Egypt and Libya and that the Internet was the best source of news and events as they unfolded. Who would have thought that posts on Facebook could be a key driver behind a change in leadership of a country? Well Egypt and the resignation of Hosni Mubarak, just proved its possible!”
But not everyone forgot that February is the month of love, so in third and fourth place, it was realized that Ghanaians were still thinking about their loved ones. Other search terms on the list were facebooklogin, Bank of Ghana, Ghana jobs, Champion’s league and soccernet.com.
