Ghana coach sticks to status quo

    The care-taker coach of Ghana Kwesi Appiah is in no hurry to change the status quo of the national team the Black Stars as they prepare to face Sudan on October 10. "The team remains the same and nothing is going to change from what we have been working on in the past," he told the Ghana FA website.

    The former international would be assuming temporary charge of the senior team following the departure of head coach, Milovan Rajevac a couple of weeks ago following the expiration of his contract.

    Appiah who has named a 20-member squad made up of two debutants has shed little light on what he hopes to achieve for the up-coming match.

    Appiah said: “We play an important game against Sudan and the result is always important. Our idea is to win the game and that would require that we put in hardwork and match our recent success in the qualifiers [game against Swaziland].

    “The structure is still the same and I don't think there's any need to change our tactical formation simply because the head coach has left and I'm taking charge for this [Sudan] game. There's no need to alter anything.

    “Every game varies and in the course of a match, if the need be, then we can then decide to switch something.

    “We have been working for two years now as a unit and know the abilities of our players and the formations that really brings out the best in our team. It always depends on the players available. There is a target [qualifying for the 2012 African Cup of Nations] and we want to reach the finals.”

    Ghana after opening the Group I qualifiers with a 3-0 away win against Swaziland in Lombamba would be at home to the Sudanese in the second game of the campaign.

    And Appiah says he is looking forward to welcoming the group next week for preparations to towards the game on October 10 when the 2012 CAN qualifiers resume.

    “It’s a professional group who are aware of the task ahead. I have lots of respect for them and it’s nice being around them, the jokes and banter that is exchanged calms everyone. Their work ethic is always good,” he said.

    The game would be first since Milovan Rajevac left his post. Ghana, losing finalist in the last tournament are aiming for a place in the finals of the competition to be co-hosted by Gabon/ Equatorial Guinea. The group also includes Congo.
