Ghana's Electoral Commission is expected to announce the winner of the presidential run-off today amidst heighten tension in the country. Meanwhile, the opposition NDC has claimed victory but its candidate Prof. Atta-Mills said its supporters should wait for the Commission's announcement.

“The figures go in our favour but I want to appeal to our supporters to exercise restraint and wait for the Electoral Commission to declare the results,” Prof. Atta-Mills told a press conference late Monday night.
Supporters of the National Democratic Congress have converged at the premises of the Commission demanding early announcement of the results because they claim figures are being “doctored” to favour the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The police had to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd.
Prof. Atta-Mills, who have been projected as the winner of the Sunday’s run-off by a popular private broadcaster – Joy FM - has promised not to embark on witch-hunting when he comes to power.
“As the nation waits for the official declaration by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC)…the nation is now at the end of the political struggle between the two contenders – NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“What remains now is for all Ghanaians to unite to build a better nation for all, irrespective of political affiliations and ethnic backgrounds,” he told party supporters at his campaign office at Osu, a suburb of Accra.
He affirmed: “With the results so far declared the chances are that we are going to be declared winners.”
In a related development, high-pitched exchanges have been traded between officials of the NPP and NDC at the offices of the Electoral Commission over allegations the NPP is trying to smuggle in doctored presidential election results, myjoyonline.com reported.
The chairman of the Commission, Dr Afari-Djan is meeting party representatives this morning to resolve the issue before he might declare the results.
