Ghana and Malawi will soon establish formal diplomatic missions which will help in various issues among them trade. The two countries are said to have planned to establish diplomatic mission through a meeting which took place in the southern African country.
Ghana and Malawi are countries which have been friends since the times of their late presidents Kwame Nkrumah and Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Media reports in Malawi said ministers of Foreign Affairs met the southern African country’s president, Bingu Wa Mutharika.
Ghana's delegation was led by Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammed Mumuni and that it comprised of president of Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and the body's Director of Multilateral Co-operation, Beatrice Brobbey.
Malawi’s local daily of the Daily Times quoted the Ghana’s Foreign minister as saying that he had discussed several issues with the southern African country ranging from opening diplomatic missions.
The missions are expected to be opened in Ghana’s Capital Accra and Malawi’s Capital City, Lilongwe.
“Malawi and Ghana share a rich history from a time where Malawians attained higher education in our country to the friendship of our founding presidents Kwame Krumah and Dr Kamuzu Banda who had a medical practice in Kumasi,” he said.
Mumuni said the coming together of the two countries was to continue the long friendship which was started by their founding presidents.
Malawi's Minister of Foreign Affairs Etta Banda said President Mutharika welcomed the idea of opening a diplomatic mission in Ghana.
“If established, our office in Ghana would provide opportunities in tourism, trade and commerce but as is the case now what remains for us is to start preparations for this,” she said.
