Ghana: Hearts of Oak crowned champions

    Accra Hearts of Oak were crowned winners of the Ghana Globacom (Glo) Premier League after beating relegated side St.Mirren in pulsating 2-0. The victory equaled the 20th league title record of their arch-rivals Asante Kotoko, which sent their fans jubilating, long after the game was over.

    The 2008-2009 league season was hotly contested between the arch rivals Asante Kotoko, King Faisal and Hearts of Lions especially in the second round.

    The fastest goal of the League was registered by striker Samuel Affum in the 48 seconds when he finalized a pass from midfielder Jojo Bossman beating goalkeeper Tagoe Muntari.

    Again, making it a brace for Hearts of Oak, Samuel Affum scored the second goal in the 36 minutes when the youngest player in the League Tawrik Jibril went pass his makers and laid a beautiful connection to the former.

    The match played at the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium saw thousands of the “never say die” lads feeling the stadium in their numbers chanting their “arose, arose, be quiet and don’t be silly…”rhythm to signal appreciation to the team.

    With eight matches to go Hearts of Oak had sacked their then Coach Kosta Papic, a Serbian, for abysmal performance although he had managed the team to occupy top spot with nine points lead.

    The win against St. Mirren became the first for Hearts of Oak since May 24 when they defeated Tema Youth 2-1 at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium and sent their jubilant supporters agog who before the game had showed anger to both the playing body and management to either win the league or call it quit.

    With only one point between Hearts of Oak and the defending Champion Kumasi Asante Kotoko, a lost will have enabled the Porcupine Warriors to win the title from them.

    As Accra Hearts of Oak mount the Africa Champions League, pundits have urged the team to work hard by building the team into a formidable side or either stay home to avoid humiliation since the team seems deteriorated.

    In 2000, Hearts of Oak won the Africa Champions League and the Super Cup. Tema Youth, Gamba All Blacks and Sporting Mirren have suffered relegation.
