Ghana: Big corruption case expected

The Ghana government is to make an official announcement starting vigorous investigations of corruption and impropriety against former President Kufuor's chief of staff today. Kwadwo Mpiani has been hurled before marathon investigation sessions at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

The outspoken former government official has been grilled for two days this week by officials of the dreaded investigation outfit over certain actions he took during the reigns of the former New Patriotic Party administration.

Mpiani is being probed on a wide range of issues – allocation of public funds during the 50th anniversary of Ghana in 2007, contracts awarded and expenditures used during the UNCTAD meeting in Accra, construction of the multi-million dollar presidential complex known as “Jubilee House” and issues relating to the beleaguered national airline, Ghana International Airline.

When AfricaNews reached the Deputy Minister of Information, Okudjeto Ablakwa, on phone he said details of the situation would be unveiled at today’s news conference at the presidency.

Government sources say files containing details of actual transactions and the allocation of contracts during his tenure in office cannot be found and data on the computers in his office could not be traced.

Hundreds of opposition supporters and ex-ministers besieged the premises of the BNI in solidarity with their colleague. Top former government officials including former president Kufuor were also in the house of Mpiani late Tuesday night to share in his ordeal.

“It is not the end but the beginning…” Mpiani told party supporters when he stormed out of the BNI yard late Tuesday night.

Information reaching AfricaNews indicate that Mpiani could be the first big fish of the previous administration to be subjected to judicial processing after the major announcement.
