The Christian Council of Ghana has condemned in no uncertain terms the practice of homosexuality in Ghana.

The Council further demanded aspirants of the various political parties seeking election into power in next year’s General election to state publicly their position on what has become a hugely controversial matter in the country.

At a press conference in Accra on Monday the General Secretary of the Council Dr. Fred Deegbe urged voters to blacklist any presidential candidate who supports the rights of gays and lesbians in any shape or form.

He contended the act of homosexuality is sinful and barbaric and must not be countenanced in the country.

“This detestable and abominable act if passed into law in Ghana will bring the wrath of God upon the nation and the consequences will be unbearable,” he said.

“…We call on all Christians to vote against all politicians who promote and support homosexuality," he urged.

He further stated “We as a Christian community in Ghana totally condemn this as an unnatural and ungodly act and call on all religious bodies and organizations, traditional rulers and all decent loving Ghanaians to join in this campaign.”

Quoting religiously from Leviticus 18:22 of the bible the Reverend stated: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman. That is detestable,” adding, “these are so clear and need no further interpretation or explanation.”

He said the practice of homosexuality is alien to the Ghanaian culture and called on all to resist the imposition of alien cultures in the name of human rights.

The moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and a member of the Christian Council Rev Prof Emmanuel Martey in corroborating the assertion of the Council’s General Secretary minced no words in stating what should be done to the politician who supports homosexuality.

He told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh:“Any politician who really supports homosexuality should not be put into office because that will incur the wrath of God upon our nation,” he declared.

Asked why Ghanaians should care if a capable politician is delivering on his promise but respects the rights of homosexuals, the Reverend noted Ghanaians must make a choice between money and destruction

His choice was obvious: “The choice is yours. Choose money or destruction and we Christians of this country we are opting for God.”

When his attention was drawn to the fact that the wrath of God has not been visited upon the US and the UK, two countries considered developed, but which support activities of homosexuality, the Rev retorted, how do you know God is not visiting his wrath upon them?

He argued one of the causes of the crumbling of the British and Roman empire is the practice of homosexuality.

He said homosexuality is not only abnormal but immoral and must be banned.

A law lecturer at the University of Ghana and human rights advocate, Kissi Adjabeng will not be drawn into religious and moral debates.

He said it is within the rights of the religious leaders to court followers not to vote for a particular political candidate but hoped it is not made a campaign issue.

He suspected that the politicians will yield to the demands of the religious leaders in order to win votes.
