Gbagbo please call me - John Kufuor

    Ex-president of West African nation Ghana John Agyekum Kufuor said he has tried several times to reach beleaguered Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo but gets no response from his end. The 72-year-old said he has left his number with Gbagbo's Aide de Camp for his former colleague to call back but nothing has come through.

    "I tried to talk to him without success; I phoned several times…I made several calls…I succeeded in contacting his AGCA at one point to give my number to him for the President to phone me [but] I didn't receive a call," the immediate past president of Ghana told Accra-based Joy FM.

    The former AU chairman said Gbagbo's decision to hold on to power despite being declared loser by his electoral body surprises him. The UN, ECOWAS and other Western diplomatic missions have thrown their support behind his rival Allassane Ouattara who was declared winner of the run-off election.

    Mr Kufuor stated that he was made the coach of the Carter Group of Observers in Cote d'Ivoire during the first round of elections and was highly impressed with the turnout and orderliness of the voting process. Therefore, events of the second round come as a surprise to him.

    Gbagbo was later declared winner by the Constitutional Council and was sworn-in over the weekend while Ouatarra also sworn himself in from a hotel he is operating from.
