Gambia won the African Under-17 Championship for the second time on Thursday. The Baby Scorpions humiliated hosts Algeria 3-1 in the final. Gambia took the lead with a diving header early in the first half. News reaching AfricaNews say that Gambians are agog with their latest football achievement.
At half-time the Gambia had doubled their tally, but Algeria had claimed a goal back through a penalty to make it 2-1, BBC news reported on its website. In the second half Gambia extended their lead and claimed the title 3-1.
Ebrima Bojang scored twice for Gambia and their other goal came from Alasana Camara. It is the second time they have won the tournament, after they triumphed at home in 2005 the team then went on to the Under-17 World Cup and beat Brazil, the report said.
Gambia and Algeria, plus beaten semi-finalists Burkina Faso and Malawi, have all qualified for this year's global event, to be hosted in Nigeria.
