The Gambia' s Immigration Department has confirmed the deportation of 64 street Children locally known as " Almudus" who were rounded up within Banjul and Serrekunda, and identified as Senegalese citizens and few identified as Gambian are kept in detention helping the department with investigation.
According to superintendent Olimatou Jammen-Sonko Spokesperson of the Gambia Immigration, the children who are all boy age between 10 and 17, were like vagabonds within Banjul and Serrekunda noting that the children were living by themselves; that most of them slept in the Mosques and under Veranda’s.
She pointed out that them were being used as child labourers at the beach side and were paid low wages and most of the were not physically healthy adding that they were causing nuisance within the communities.
She disclosed that all the 64 children are natives of Kabada, Njamakuta and Medinaunas, all in Senegal and they were deported under the escort of their officers to the border and handed them to the Senegalese authorities noting that the Senegalese authorities in Banjul were aware of the development.
“From now no, teenagers travelling to Gambia without parents will no be allowed in and her department will put all measures to stop the flood of children in the Gambia.
