Malawi: MACRA shuts down Joy Radio
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority has shut down Joy Radio Station with immediate effect after revoking its licence for what it called 'breaching its licence conditions'. Joy has been breaching Communications Act by transferring ownership of the radio into the hands of a politician. - Former President Bakili Muluzi owns the radio and according to Section 44 of the Act, no politician or a group of politicians shall be given a broadcasting licence to operate a radio.

- The journalist, Wanangwa Tembo was on Wednesday March 12 2008, arrested before confiscating his camera and his ID. He was released an hour later without any charge. The Media for Southern Africa Malawi chapter has since condemned the arrest. "This is an infringement of freedom of the press," said MISA Malawi Secretary General Francis Tayanya Phiri who said the body is going to take up the issue. "I feel sorry that I was arrested for committing no crime," said Tembo in an interview soon after his release from Police.
