Ghana's telecoms regulator has extended the deadline for PrePay SIM card users to register their details with the mobile networks before their SIM card is disconnected. The deadline, which was due to come into effect on the 1st July, has now been granted a 90-day extension.

The extension was requested by the operators who are struggling to cope not just with unregistered accounts, but also revalidating the details of some 5 million accounts which were opened without the newly required proofs of identity.

As an incentive to encourage users to register, the forthcoming launch of Mobile Number Portability will go ahead, but will be restricted to only those accounts where the user has proven their identity to their current mobile network provider.
