The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has held its National Delegate Congress over the weekend to choose a flagbearer who will lead the party in the 2012 general elections.
The contest was between the incumbent President J.E.A Mills and former First Lady Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, wife of former President J.J Rawlings
The Delegates Congress which was to elect a flag bearer for the party saw delegates coming to converge in the Northern city of Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana. In attendance were over three thousand delegates ready to vote from all over the country and the party executives from the diaspora.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana supervised the ballots which President Mills won overwhelmingly.
He pulled 2,777 representing 96. 9 percent with his main competitor, former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings getting only 90 votes representing 3.1 percent.
President siad the results is "no victory" for any individual but that with the contest over, the battle for 2012 has begun and called for unity.
He said perhaps the only losers are those who wished the contest had been bloody, but he was humbled by the massive show of support.
After the EC has declared President Mills as the winner of the election, former President Rawlings walked up to President Mills and lifted his left hand up to tumultuous cheers from his supporters, signifying his acceptance of the results.
President Mills congratulate Nana Konadu efforts and for giving him a "good fight" and also helping to unearth challenges facing the party which were taken for granted.
he President assured members of the party that certain issues raised during the campaign period would not be "swept under the carpet", stressing, "honestly" that they would be addressed.
President Mills called on all to ensure that peace and unity prevailed in the party because they are one family, and urged them to rather take the fight to the NDC's political opponents.
He therefore asked them to avoid name calling, insults, bickering and divisive tendencies that would affect the fortunes of the party in 2012.
He pledged to work harder as the leader of the NDC, assuring members that the "future is bright" for the party.
