Heavy downpour has claimed about 102 lives in Nigeria. Torrential rainfall in Ibadan, the Oyo state in the South-west part of the country started on Friday night and fell till Saturday morning resulting in massive flooding that destroyed properties worth millions of dollars.

Two major bridges collapsed in the state due to the inundation, which was further aggravated by Eleyele dam which busted its dam. Residents have since started to construct a makeshift wooden bridge to enhance movement that has being completely grounded.

Officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) claim that 102 lives have being lost to the flood and hundreds of the flood victims are now accommodated at a camp for internally displaced people at a primary school (Sacred Heart Primary School) in the state.

In a very drastic reaction, the state governor; Abiola Ajimobi has issued a 7-day ultimatum to owners of structures built along the right of way and traders along the flood plain areas in the city to quit the areas because all structures blocking free flow of water would be pulled down.

“The flooding would not have been this much, were it not for the flagrant disregard for town planning rules by past administrations. Approvals were just being given for erection of structures indiscriminately,” the governor said. He described the city as “not a disaster zone but a devastated zone.”

The state is famed to be the ‘dirtiest state in Nigeria’ and the Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA); Muhammed Sani Sidi alluded to this when he visited that state on Monday to deliver relief materials to the flood victims. He cautioned against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse.

The nation’s premiere tertiary institution; the University of Ibadan, located in the city was not spared the wrought of the downpour. According to the Vice-chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole; the institution, the school has lost properties worth N10billion and has appealed to the federal government for support. The school lost its Fish Farm with different species of fish valued at about N300 million, over flooding of the Zoological Garden, leading to the death of animals, extensive damage of the Teaching and Research Farm and the destruction of books estimated to the tune of N2billion. Buildings, laboratories and expensive equipment were destroyed by the flood which equally pulled down the university fence and 13 electricity poles, thereby compounding the poor electricity supply to the school. Also the Polytechnic in the city has ordered a head-count to ascertain the casualties of the flood following reported cases of missing persons and students.

Nigeria has witnessed severe flooding in recent years. Last year, thousands of lives were lost across the country with flood water ravaging some states in both the northern and southern parts of the country during the height of the rainy season. The coastal city of Lagos has had two consecutive years of flooding during the rainy season, as it recorded a record amount of rainfall in July with a record of 264mm rainfall which claimed 20 lives.

The Nigerian Meterological Agency (NIMET) had earlier in the year predicted heavy rainfall and landslides in many states this year but despite this forecast, the nation has witnessed widespread destruction of properties and loss of lives due the lack of adequate drainage channels.
