FORMER ZAMBIAN LEADER TOLD TO BE NEUTRAL

  1. FREDERICK CHILUBA CAUTIONED ON HIS POLITICAL STANCE
A Zambian civil society organization has tipped Former President Frederick Chiluba to remain neutral and not get involved in politics.
This comes in the backdrop of Dr Chiluba having publicly declared his support for the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) under the leadership of President Rupiah Banda.
The Citizens Forum Executive Secretary Simon Kabanda says the former president’s involvement in politics would not be an issue if Dr Chiluba took a neutral stance.
In an interview, Mr Kabanda has explained that the office of the Former President should be used by all stakeholders as an office for guidance on matters pertaining to national development.
“The office of the Former President is in itself a respectable office and it is expected that different politicians belonging to different political parties should be able to feel free to go and consult on certain issues and get advice.” Kabanda has said.
Mr Kabanda has described as ‘offline’, Dr Chiluba’s decision to declare support for a particular party stressing that Dr Chiluba should be neutral so that people can consult him on national issues.
“Our advice to the former president is that he should take a neutral stance so that politicians from different political parties can feel free to go and seek advice on anything because it is a little bit offline for the former president to already come out and declare support for a particular party or candidate.” Kabanda added.
Dr Frederick Chiluba who ruled Zambia for ten years from 1991 faced corruption charges soon after his tenure of office which he has since been acquitted of but has now been condemned by the opposition parties in Zambia for campaigning for the ruling party since his acquittal last year.
Other sentiments are that the former head of state should not be given his benefits as Second Republic president since he has re-joined politics.
