The two European giants eased their way to the last four after recording respective draws in pulsating return leg quarterfinal games.

Barcelona, the La Liga leaders, pulled a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in Germany to sail through on a 5-1 aggregate following their 4-0 first leg home win while Chelsea begged a 4-4 home draw with Liverpool to progress on a 7-5 aggregate. They had earlier beaten Liverpool 3-1 in the first leg game a week earlier.

The contribution of the African celebrated players to the success of their respective clubs and the usually unending debate in the continent as to which of them is greater make the Barca – Chelsea clash a must-watched match for their fans in and out of Africa.

Eto’o Fils scored one of the four goals of Barcelona in the first leg game while Drogba set Chelsea back on track in the return leg game when they needed it most, trailing Liverpool 2-0 at the start of the second half and with all the momentum against them. The Ivorian put the Blues on the score sheet by turning a Nicolas Anelka cross goalwards and forcing Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina to spill the ball into his own net. Minutes later the striker collected a superb ball from Michael Ballack and surged clear before setting up Lampard who netted it.

Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o have both bagged the prestigious African Footballer of the Year award and the Champions League clash will be one of rare moments when the players confront each other. The two players are lead strikers in their clubs and would certainly attract much attention in the semi-finals games.
