Ethiopian telecom cuts tariffs

    Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (ETC) announced that it has made 69 to 98 per cent discount on client subscription fee for broadband internet services and 13 to 66 per cent discount has been made on internet service.

    According to the corporation, which is the government monopoly telecom service tariff discount has also been made on CDMA services the initial fee to fixed telephone service has been reduced to 144.10 birr (around $12 ) from 283.30 birr ( around $25 ) previously.

    It is indicated that the discount was made to encourage investors, corporate clients, and other partners engaged in development activates in the country. The corporation also indicated that the discount will also help the corporate achieve its vision and bring the access to African average. The tariff for post paid CDMA wireless service will be the same with fixed telephone service.

    This year, the corporation has planned to avail 6 million mobile phone, 500,000 fixed line telephones, 182,000 value-added services and 50,000 additional internet network capacities. It also plans to sign mobile roaming agreements with 60 additional telecom operators across the globe.

    ETC has also planned to avail 50,000 capacity public phones throughout the country as well as to expand rural telecom services in the remaining 8,000 kebles/centers that had been never reached by telecom infrastructures before.
    During the same budget year, internet service will be availed to rural areas that have already been accessed to telephone infrastructures, according to the statement of the corporation.

    In 2008, ETC registered 1,527,255,000 birr ($152 million) a net profit before tax with a total of 12, 288 employees and 936 total numbers of service stations. Out of the 77 million total population of Ethiopia, the total number of mobile subscribers is not more than three million.

    Four years ago, mobile telephone subscription under all categories of customers i.e. individuals, business, government and others has reached 410,630. The number of subscribers in year 2004/05 as compared to that of year 2003/04 has increased by 255,096 (164.01%) but the mobile density of the country was only 0.56%.

    According to the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU’s) World Telecommunication Indicators Database 2005, by year 2004, Nigeria had registered 9,147,209 subscribers; Kenya 2,546,157, Ghana 1,695,000, Tanzania 1,640,000, Cameroon 1,536,594 and Ethiopia had only 410,630 mobile subscribers.

    In the same year, Central Africa Republic has registered 60,000, Chad 123,000 and Niger 148,300 mobile subscribers. In terms of growth rate between year 2003 and 2004 mobile subscribers in Nigeria has increased by 190.44%, Angola by 182.45%, Ethiopia by 164.01%, Ghana by 113.07%, Sudan by 98.88% and Niger by 93.62%.
